UAW Strike

Since we're talking about cars here today, I'd like to express my solidarity with the 73,000 UAW (United Auto Workers) who went out on strike against GM (General Motors).

Picket lines were seen shortly after 11:00 am in at least three sites around Ohio and elsewhere across the US. There are 82 GM facilities in the United States.

Talks have broken down after union and GM negotiators have failed to come to agreement on how much money GM must put into a trust fund for retiree health care, the main sticking point between the union and the company.

This strike may become a seminal event for the US labor movement. Major industrial companies and municipalities, with help from the corrupt ush administration, have been slamming unions for years and this strike was more planned by GM management than by the UAW, as negotiations dragged on for nearly three weeks.

It's now becoming clear that GM was never negotiating in good faith, forcing the hand of the UAW in an attempt to break one of our nation's last and most influential unions.

I'll continue to update developments on this blog as events warrant.
